I need some input (and hopefully this is the right forum for it)...

We just bought a house and to celebrate we are going to be buying a new bed! I'm a real sucker for the elegant simplicity of Japanese design so much of our house will have a lot of oriental accents. We are considering getting a platform bed but my one concern is the fact that our rather energetic bedroom antics will be damaging to a bed that doesn't have a box-spring. Does anyone else have a platform bed? Does it hold up to the abuse? I'm eager to hear your take on this...

Thanks ajay.. So you haven't had any trouble w/ a platform bed?

We've actually been on the board for a few years, but we don't post very often and for some reason it would not let me on this time unless I created a new account!?! Oh well... Time to think up a new signature anyway!

my wife and i were dating and she had a waterbed frame with a conventional mattress. we liked that alot and we abused it.

we now have an antique bed that i have converted to a platform. you're not going to get that "bounce and rebound" when you're pounding away, but on the other hand she sure knows she's getting it all.

No experience with a platform bed, but we just went from a metal (steel) frame bed to a great solid wooden bedroom set. The steel bed would shake a lot and took a lot of abuse, but the wooden one doesn't move from a good pounding. You'll have to let us know how the platform one works out for you Smiler

Tempur-Pedic Bed. I little pricy but:

Its visco-elastic foam technology was developed by NASA during the 1970s to help cushion astronauts during liftoff.

Plus really nice on the knees.

we own a stearns and foster double pillowtop. its a really nice bed. i spent time on a tempurpedic. but i like to toss and turn. and it didnt serve me well. felt immobilized on a tempur.

drawback? as a king size. its huge. and the massive mattress weighs a ton. very hard for one person to flip

you dont often need a box spring. just be sure to use enough slats under it.

some very nice platform beds out there tho on the modernist market. interested to see how you enjoy them!

cheers
N.

Sorry, no platform bed comments. But we LOVE our waveless waterbed! I didn't think I'd like it at first, but have come to LOVE it. So comfy, GREAT for my bad back (surprising) and I sleep like a baby!

Cheers!

I don't have any advice about what kind of bed to buy, but I did want to put my two cents in.

For years We had an old king size mattress - no bed, just a mattress. Right on the floor for quite a while, then we got all fancy and hubby got some old wooden skids (the kind they ship cargo on in trucks) and we got raised off the floor about 4 inches. Hubby had big plans to make a platform for it, but just never really got around to it. But we made the best of what we had, we bought some of those lights (don't remember what they are called, but they are LEDs in a clear hose type thing) and fastened the around the base, covered the wood skids with nice material - I would call the style "poverty Disco". Needed some cushion though because it hurt like a bitch when you stubbed your toe.

Anyway, 2 years ago when we bought our new house, our beloved mattress would not fit into our new bedroom. It was time for a real bed, we couldn't go on living the dorm life when our children had better furniture than we did. So we downsized to a queen, bought a real bed - with a headboard and everything - even got one of those memory foam ones.

We knew going from the king to queen would be an adjustment. Unfortunately I CAN NOT sleep with anyone touching me. So we aren't cuddlers, and I toss and turn the entire night. But that wasn't even the worst part. We found that we were quite spoiled with our old bed because we could roll around, and lay halfway off the bed, which was especially convenient for oral sex - both of us could be laying down comfortably. Now, with the smaller bed, we can't quite roll around as much. Plus, there is no way we can lay half way off the bed while pleasuring each other.

One day I will have a room that is completely bed, like what you see on the movies that are full of harem girls lounging about. Oh, and my shower will have 2 heads - hubby likes to shower together but hogs the water! ahhh to dream.....

There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count, and those who can't.
