Since we have lots of friends in the community, we would love to have some opinions about the names we are considering for our little girl coming in April. We are keeping all of our choices a secret from our friends and family, but we could use some feedback. Granted, ultimately the decision is ours to make (and we may not decide until after we see her), but none-the-less we could use some feedback. Please be gentle as we like all 3 of them fairly equally.

We are looking for something that is not very common, but yet not totally off the wall either. None of them have any "sentimental" or family value to them.

Here goes:

Shayla Rayne
Corley Elizabeth
Darrah Lynn

We also would be interested in hearing other names that people have heard and liked and/or know someone with an uncommon name.

Thanks guys!

We were politically correct and used the names of the grandfathers for our son and the names of the grandmothers for our daughter. However they were common names.

However, I have alway been partial to Mabel. Smiler

Just kidding -- Good luck on the naming thing.

As a gal with a unique name (Mich, and yes it is my real name), I will put in a heartfelt plug for an uncommon name.

I like Darrah the best of the three; Corley is kind of cute but people will assume Carly or Corey (just be prepared); not so much Shayla (sounds too much like Kayla/Kaylee/Michela names that are SO overused these days).

My sister is pregnant, so the whole family is going through name suggestions. You have probably seen these sites already, but I thought they are really cool:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

The Social Security Administration database of registered names is very cool because you can search a specific name going back 10/20/25 years to see what the trend is. Fun to look up your own name! Keep in mind that the name might not be popular now, but could be steadily increasing in popularity.

But the names you are considering are truly unique, not just uncommon, so they won't show up on any list, for sure! Good luck!

Cheers!

As another girl with a unique name (Dereth), I also approve of the different names. Of the three, I like Darrah. She will always have to explain Corley ("no, not Corey. Corley!")

So yeah, my vote's for Darrah Lynn Smiler

Our criteria for picking a name was that it not be so totally weird that people can't spell it or think we were stoned when we picked it, but it had to be a name you don't hear real often either. We named our first son Morgan Ian (Morgan is my maiden name and Ian is my husband's name) and we have finally picked a name for our second little boy due in 5 weeks: Aidan Wesley. Wesley was my great-grandfathers middle name too. We thought we were were being all cool because I've never heard the name Aidan (except Aidan Quinn) and I've come to find out it is super popular in our neck of the woods for new babies. Poo.

My neighbors opted for Ruthie Bee - not Ruth, Ruthie. They almost went with Zelda (which is my grandmother's name) but that would have had to have been pretty gutsy.

All that said, I vote for Darrah for the same reasons that Dereth and Mitch cited.

As someone with an uncommon name for a girl - McKenzie - although not so much now as when I was growing up, I'm definitely all for unusual names. I still get asked if it's my last name, though, which is a wee bit annoying. Good luck with choosing one! Although we're still "newly pregnant," we've already begun the"ohmygodwhatarewegoingtonamethebaby" fun. Smiler If I had to pick one of your choices, I'd go with Darrah.

OK, has anyone noticed anything about the name combination Darrah Lynn? Our pronunciation of it is with the R sound not the "air" sound for Darrah. Wink

Oh god, so sorry mich. I suck. I should not try to communicate when I feel so crappy.

My Ian gets mail addressed to Jan a lot, because somehow the "I" gets mistaken for a lowercase J.

Topless added the "Lynn" to the name and we both started talking about it before realizing how close it was to "darlin". We had a pretty good laugh over it and thought it would be absolutely great fun to use that as it really shows off our sometimes odd sense of humor without being offensive or overbearing for the kid to be stuck with a way out there name like "Apple".

Darrah actually comes from a place we visited in Australia. That in particular has some very nice memories with it because it represents a new beginning to our lives together.

We went the complete opposite and picked "Alexandra" for ours, because it gave her such a large number of possible nicknames. It's difficult naming a child when you don't know what her personality will be.

Of the names you listed, I also prefer Darrah, even if it is named after a place in Aussie. I suppose it's lucky you didn't go with Darrah Sydney Smiler

My step-dad and his 1st wife named their daughter (almost 40 years ago) Cherry Lynn because they lived on Chery Lynn Lane. My mom pointed out that it was a good thing they didn't live on Route 9 or something.
