So... I have to keep an editorial journal for my writing class this term. I've been struggling for two days to find editorials I'm interested in writing about, and the search is NOT going well.
So here's my plea: without having to search through each individual large newspaper's archives, where can I find relatively current editorials or op/ed pieces that might interest me enough to annotate and respond to? I'm in argumentative class this term (go figure) and while I'm interested in going outside my comfort zone a little with these editorials, I also want to be able to work with subjects that interest me and that I have some knowledge of. Having said that, there are two banned topics from the teacher and a couple more I'd prefer to avoid. Banned are Abortion and Capital Punishment. I'd prefer to avoid Iraq, elections, and terrorism in general. Some topics I AM interested in include pornography and adult entertainment, RIAA and the music industry, health topics, climate change, interesting bills going through legislature either at the state or federal levels, among other things. Does anyone know of a great resource for finding a searchable archive of editorials? I'm utilizing EBSCOhost to an extent and doing individual searches where I can, but I'm not coming up with a whole lot that I'm interested in. ~Ang |

EXCELLENT! |
Ang,
If your school has access to the Gale-Thompson databases or the infotrack (both are online), that is a great place to search. You can search by topic and limit your search to specific journals. I used it pleanty of times while in school for articles on articles ranging from business related topic to psychology, to rick analysis. Good Luck. I'll just crush him like an ant. |

Hey Ang,
When I took WR122 I used the Editorial and Op-Ed sections of the New York Times; there was a lot of good material there. It's generally intellligent and well written, but you won't have any trouble deconsturcting the arguments. You can get free access at http://www.nytimes.com/pages/opinion/index.html There's my best suggestion for now... Glad you had such fun at AVN in Vegas! Happy Belated Birthday! |

I know your class is long over.
Still, op-eds have new importance during the final weeks of US election cycle. I like NYTimes because if I read it everyday for long enough I detect some pretty clever inside jokes. For anyone who likes foreign films [go on and on and never seem to make a specific point], I recommend The New Yorker Magazine. Balance with The Wall Street Journal or Washington Post or The Spectator. If you read even those thoroughly and often enough, you'll be right up there with the instructor. |
