We were taking a trip down memory lane and laughing at all the shows we used to watch as "latch key kids." Here are my faves:
1. Brady Bunch 2. Kimba the White Lion 3. Ultraman 4. Partridge Family 5. Leave it to Beaver 6. Astroboy 7. Jonny Socko and His Giant Robot 8. Bugs and Friends 9. The Banana Splits (Danger Island ROCKED) 10. The Monkeys We also had this thing called "The 3:30 Movie," in which they'd play - for example - 5 James Bond or Sinbad/Ray Harryhausen flicks in a row. Or five sports movies, or musicals, or whatever. Also had a cool Saturday night segment called "Creature Features," which was hosted by a guy named John Stanley. I loved some of those horror flicks, like the original "Dracula, Frankenstein," and Wolf Man. I totally freaked and had nightmares for weeks after staying up to watch "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" and loved other classics like "It Came from Outer Space," the original "The Thing," and "The Day the Earth Stood Still (which I understand is being remade)." Freddy sounds like we were watching the same things.
I so loved Johnny Socko and the Flying Robot. Fact is to this day I still remember about 80% of the "kata" that the robot used to activate his powers. While ultra man was fun it just nevr had the impact of Flying Robot. here in Detroit it was the 4:30 Movie and we had Ape Week, Godzilla Week and a host of others that would keep dad and me spellbound. Our saturday monster show was Sir Graves in the morning and The Ghoul at night. We got to watch some world class Sci-Fi/Horror These titles should take ya back to your youth! Them Forbidden Planet Giant Mantis Andromeda Strain Logans Run War of the Worlds This Island Earth Five Million Years to Earth From the Earth to the Moon The Time Machine The Day the Earth Stood Still (Gort Klatuu Barada Nicto) |

Dude, I cried for weeks after Giant Robot flew the evil eyeball into space and blew himself up. BTW, did "The Iron Giant" rip off Jonny Socko or what? Right down to the sacrifice at the end! Songchick, I LOVED Land of the Lost, though it pissed me off that they never found their way back week after week. At least on Danger Island, they did discover the scientist's dead brother in a cave. We just watched "Logan's Run" on DVD and it was really friggin' cool. There's actually an orgy scene in it! The series, in my opinion, never measured up to the movie. This Island Earth, Them, and Andromeda Strain kill. Rule! Get FREE shipping on US orders $100 or more in our online store ("forums" discount code still applies). I don't agree, but here's the first Ultraman episode from 1966 to relive some great memories:

Oh I also saw this on netflix, not sure if it is good or not. But it looks like they did an anime that updates the Johnny Socko story.
-----------------------Giant Robo--------------------- Director Yasuhiro Imagawa infuses this series -- an extended remake of the 1960s live-action film Johnny Sokko and his Giant Robot -- with wit and glamour while recounting the battle between two opposing forces: the noble Experts of Justice and their enemies, the menacing force called Big Fire that's plotting to lead the world straight into complete obliteration. But energized by new member Daisaku Kusama, the Experts commit to a fight. |

I was all about Rupert, this British show about a white bear who lived in Nutwood and had awesome friends like Pong-Ping the Chinese dog, who had a lift to China.
And since there's a double generation gap between me and my parents, I grew up watching Bonanza, I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Gilligan's Island, and Leave It To Beaver instead of the cartoons my friends watched, although I occasionally caught an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We also rented a movie every Friday night to watch together, and it was always an old movie like The Great Escape, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Them!, The African Queen, or the classic horror films like the Boris Karloff Mummy, the old Dracula, and Creature From the Black Lagoon. Sunday nights were when we watched a Hitchcock movie during supper. I guess I was exposed to more classics as a child than most, and I think it's given me a broader knowledge base than most kids my age. My parents are quite possibly the coolest people in the world!
