1. "Sinner's Guide To The Evangelical Right"
A pretty funny overview of the Religious Right, Funny and scary. 2. "The trouble with Islam Today" Nothing funny in this one, but still pretty interesting. |

Actually just one I'm reading now but didn't want to start a new thread. I try to do my part to be "green", even on these boards.
"Boom" by Tom Brokaw. As someone born in 1965, I missed out on the decade. While Pot was becoming mainstream, I was still more involved with "potty training". I guess what I like about the book so far, I'm about half way through it, is the way people involved in those turbulent times, view it and it's impact 40 years later, not always what you would guess, and how those times still influence our political and social realities of today. that was my time and place....and i guess that's why there's such division politically today. some of us were quite "anti-establishment" which has evolved into the "left".....and there was the "establishment" that evolved into the "right" i guess we old hippies die hard. |

Re-reading The Hobbit for the millionth time
Soon, will start The Children of Hurin, Tolkien's book that was finished by his son. Excellent Christmas present that I can't wait to start! *~When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad I'm better. -Mae West~* |

Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare, And left the flushed print in a poppy there. ~Francis Thompson |
I read the full series from Hobbit to Return of the King every year. I even get through the Silmarillion every other year or so. Been doing that since high school.
Started the Pern series by Ann McAffrey. Read Dragon Spawn, First Fall, and Dragon Ride, Dragon Quest and the White Dragon (last 3 are combined into one volume). MJ ------------------------------ A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. ~James Dent |

One of the opinions put forth by many in the book, both left and right, is that the actions of many "anti-establishment left, the violence, treatment of returning soldiers from Vietnam, all police were "pigs", etc, actually gave rise to the conservative movement that still exists today, which basically had been laid to waste in the huge Goldwater defeat in 1964. Formally solid Democratic South started moving towards the Republicans which still is much the case today. So I guess you, Ajay, are to blame for Karl Rove, Pat Robertson, and W. You should remove your hats and stand accountable. "We are the people, our parents warned us about" |

now don't mix up a peace-loving pot-smoking anti-violent hippie with the evolution on warmongers. you have to leave that to the religious right....you know, the folks god talks to...LOL!! Who opposed the war? Contrary to the impression promulgated by the media then, and overwhelmingly prevalent today opposition to the war was not concentrated among affluent college students. In fact, opposition to the war was inversely proportional to both wealth and education. Blue-collar workers generally considered themselves "doves" and tended to favor withdrawal from Vietnam, while those who considered themselves "hawks" and supported participation in the war were concentrated among the college-educated, high-income strata. anyway here's a very good overview of that time period, and a very good read. it will take about 10 minutes...... |
