With the release of the latest Bond flick, let's dig around our memories and throw out some words about the world's greatest (and enduring) spy. I'll start us off:

Best Bond: Pierce Brosnan was alright, Timothy Dalton kind of a cold fish, and Roger Moore sucked ass. We won't even mention the Lazenby experiment, though Diana Rigg made that one worth watching. CONNERY rules all, and I'm hoping Craig comes close.

Best Bond Flick: TIE - Diamonds are (indeed) Forever and Goldfinger. Honorable mentions to Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, which had the huge spectacular action finishes.

Best Bond theme song: Goldfinger - hands down. No one can beat Shirley Bassey belting out "He loves ONLYYYYY GOOOOOOLD!!!" She killed it again with Diamonds are Forever as well.

Best Bond villainous henchmen: TIE for first between Oddjob and Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd by a mile, with Jaws a distant second (beFORE he went gooey good in Moonraker), Donald "Red" Grant, Helga Brandt, with honorable mention to Nick Nack (gotta love Herve' Villechiaze!). I did like Zao as well.

Best Villains: Auric Goldfinger, Dr. Julius No, and and Ernst Stavro Blofeld (the one played by Donald Pleasence). No one else even comes close.

Hottest Bond Chicks: Toughest category to call, but I have to go with Ursula Andress coming out of the water in Dr. No as queen of the Bond chicks, though Barbara Bach in the shower of Spy Who Loved Me gave me jerk off material for weeks. I'd be remiss to leave off Kissy Suzuki and Tsai Chin from You Only Live Twice, Jane Seymour in her prime from Live and Let Die, Britt Ekland from Man with the Golden Gun, Talisa Soto from License to Kill, Halle Berry from Die Another Day, and Maud Adams for being the only gal to appear in two Bond flicks (Octopussy and Man with the Golden Gun).

Oh man, how could I forget the CAR?

Best Bond Auto: Lotus Espirit from Spy Who Loved Me. The friggin' thing turned into a missile firing SUBMARINE fer chrissake! Special mention to the water jet bike from the same movie.

Best Bond Gadget: Radioactive lint from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Place in pocket of unsuspecting target and get a location fix instantly.

the lotus? argh. debatable.. comon. ejection seat! gps years before it was reality, oil slick on demand. and those tire shredding knock offs. a destructo for every occasion!
the lint? oh god you are a scholar. i bow to your trivial superiority.

do you like the original q. or the new and improved john cleese version?

cheers!
Nigel.

God I could kiss you... in a total hetero way though... Lazenby was the WORSE Bond ever. Now... as far as cars go... I gotta go with the good old Aston Martin DB7. The Vanquish is pretty damned hot though. As far as villians go... Alec Travellian. I mean c'mon.. a rogue 00-agent.. and here's a new one.

Best Bond Bad Girl Tie between Xena Onnatop and Elektra King Both sooooo frakkin hot.

*yep, I had to edit it. Don't ask why. Pet peeve.*

I DO know my Bond, Nigel, but Ranger, I saw that rogue shit coming in the first five minutes. Puh-leeze. I DO bow down to that Aston Martin, though, but the Lotus was just soooo... smooth yet deadly.

John Cleese sucks as Q; I just can't watch him without thinking he's going to belt out "It's only a flesh wound," or "Ah yes, you AH a vulgarian, aren't you."

Oh, and a shout out to the original Moneypenny; a great foil to Connery's sly Bond.

I forgot to mention Denise Richards and Michelle Yoeh as bad ass (and hot) Bond chicks.

"Frakkin", Ranger? *smiles, rolls eyes, smiles some more*

If it were anyone but John I'd swear the new Q was just trying to immitate the irreplaceable Desmond Llewelyn, who had it right when Python boy was busy with parrots and silly walks. I like him, but he's going to have to work on character development.

Nobody sucked at being Bond except Lazenby; personally I liked Mr. Glass-jaw.

Goldfinger still reigns supreme in almost every category. There's no outlandish, big-production, totally unbelievable bullshit action sequence at the end and it doesn't pull many punches.

Goldfinger gets it for theme song, but Tina Turner belts out Goldeneye almost as well. Hmm, something about Gold...?

The "Old Man" henchman in "From Russia With Love" is one of my top picks though. Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd? No... No... *shakes head*

Best bad guy one-liner ever:
"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"

Best car ever: ALWAYS Aston Martin!
(unless they give him a Bentley someday)
The DB-5 in Goldfinger
Honorable mention to the Vantage Volante from Living Daylights ROCKED. Lasers mounted in the hubs to slice, dice and julianne cop cars with the driver unaware, snow spikes and outriggers, missiles and the rest

The best gadget is always the watch. Laser, garotte, detonator, mega-magnet, the list goes on. Whatever you need; the watch does it.
Don't forget the respirator from Thunderball though. Apparently the DOD called EON productions wanting to know where to get them and how to build them.

Most nefarious villain? TIE: Max Zorin and Hugo Drax. Not only completely psychotic entrepreneurial geniuses; they both had mass-murder conspiracies that were staggering in scale. Honorable mention to Colonel Moon for guile though.

New question: What do you think about the whole concept of starting over with Bond? Overdue? Worst idea ever?

On balance I think starting over will turn out fine despite my reservations. Bond can be made fresh and given greater relevancy in the modern atmosphere. Judi Dench has been held over and I'm sure there are a few other carry-over players coming along with her. The production folks have handled Bond films before so I'm sure they will do well.

All I have to do is manage to get out and see the blessed thing while tending house, going to school and managing a 7 month-old and a 23 month-old kid. Yeesh.

Thanks to the Avengers I have always had a thing for Diana Rigg, so I would have to go with Tracy Di Vicenzo, AKA, Tracy Bond, from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". Hey, she was the only one good enough for Bond to marry, eh?

As for villians, Donald Pleasence's Blofeld was the best.

Hey, it inspired Dr. Evil, no???....throw me a freakin bone here! Wink
