My wife and I love Sushi. A few days ago we were dining at one of our favorite Sushi bars and decided to try Toro for the first time. Toro is from the fatty under belly of a Tuna and thus has a higher fat content. To be honest, we think that we prefer the normal Maguro and fail to understand the excitement concerning Toro. Let's talk about Sushi. Cool

I'm single, 46, like long moonlit walks off a short pier and I'm into
  • Shoft Shell Crab Roll,
  • Saba (Mackerel),
  • Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe),
  • Hamachi (Yellowtail), and
  • Hokkagai (Sea clam)
  • Asahi beer. Not sushi, but still.

I wish there were menus at sushi for people wanting to learn about sushi. We have been wanting to try sushi but need some handholding.

Seems like all the sophistimacated people allready know what sushi is all about.

My gay, New York uncle took me out for sushi about 20 years ago. I felt pretty squimish at first. Now I stuff myself like pig.

Start with something simple like a California roll (cuke, avacodo and crab). Most places have a lot of rolls that don't have any raw fish.

From there try something with something with smoked salmon.

After that try tuna. In my opinion it's the easiest way to try raw fish.

Next thing you know you'll be eating raw sea urchin roe!

And down forget flying fish roe. You'll love the way the little orange eggs pop in your mouth!

ROTFL So cool, FlyGuy. I am glad that others share my Sushi fetish.

My name is Jazz, BermudaJazz and I am a married hedonistic left over from the sixties.

Your wish is my command, ca_grown here is a link to a great Sushi site. eatsushi.com

The first time that I enjoyed Sushi was back in 1979 at a place called the Japanese Rock Garden in New York City. I was hooked Wink

Here is a true Sushi story. In February of 1999 my wife and I were staying in downtown Chicago for a few days and we decided to visit, Restaurant Suntory located at 11 E. Huron St.(since closed). It was a a grey Chicago winter day with a light rain and scattered snow flurries. We walked from our hotel over to Restaurant Suntory and were disappointed to learn that we were too early for dinner but were delighted to learn that the upstairs Sushi bar was open. We walked up the stairs, past burning incense and entered the dimly lit Sushi bar.

We were alone except for one couple that was sitting at the far corner of the U shaped bar. As we ordered some hot Sake and looked over the menu, we heard a voice suggesting the best Sushi, I looked in the direction of the voice, my eyes now adjusted to the dim light and I was shocked to see that the couple was Donald Rumsfeld and his wife. I smiled and thanked him for his advice, not indicating that I recognized him, so that they could retain their privacy.

We enjoyed great Sushi that afternoon and then we left the restaurant, stepped into the cold Chicago winter air and hailed a cab. It was a very unusual day and at the time, I thought that it reminded me of something out of a John le Carré novel. Little did I know then what the future was to bring.

At the time, my wife and I were very liberal Republicans however after the last 6 years, we will never again vote Republican.

Why don't we post some of our favorite Sushi Restaurants? I will start with, Hatsuhana
which is unfortunately closed in Chicago but open in New York and Honolulu.

Sushi House located in several Chicago suburbs as well as a suburb of Kansas City.

Tamarindlocated in Deerfied Beach, Florida, directly south of Boca Raton.

Enjoy.

Jazz

hey ca_grown:

You could check out this So You Wanna Enjoy Sushi site. Or you can pick up that little visual menu most places have on the table and point! I second Tony's points. Go for it!

Hey Jazz!

I discovered sushi at Hana Sushi, Wilshire Blvd, West LA, 1981. At that time their slogan was "Take your tushi to Hana Sushi". Took a while to warm up to the idea. Like oh, 90 seconds.

In LA area I like Sushi Rokuin Santa Monica. Trendy, busy, but good. In the Boston area it's Sushi by Yoshi on Nantucket. Those are my favs.

Very cool FlyGuy, thanks for the links. Amazing story ca_grown, Rummy at a monument in the middle of the night, reminds me of Nixon, praying with Kissinger and talking to the portraits on the walls of he White House before he was impeached. Smiler

This thread is exactly what I like about Freddy and Eddy, the site reminds me so much of Playboy magazine. I have read Playboy since I was 11 years old and contrary to the old joke, I read it for both the pictures and the articles. Cool

LA has GOT to be the sushi capital of the world.

How funny, Fly, we're meeting a friend for lunch at Sushi Roku on Monday. Our sushi bar of choice is Wabi Sabi , on Abbott Kinney Blvd. in Venice, at which you can find us (along with Bonkmaster) almost every Thursday evening. We used to like Hama at Windward Circle, but it was taken over by Koreans and has gone downhill ever since. Maybe they should just turn it into a Korean BBQ joint and be done with it.

For truly heavenly sushi, The Hump , at Santa Monica airport is the Westside's best. The bar overlooks the runway, the decor is amazing, and they actually (in some cases) bring out the fish alive and slice it up right in front of you (the looks on patron's faces when they prop up the still moving head is priceless!). Talk about FRESH. We've just discovered a fast food sushi roll place on Washington called Fresh in the Box that makes fabulous rolls using all organic ingedients. Totally addicted.

My wife gave me a sushi class at California Sushi Academy , now located on Centinela, which really paid dividends in our kitchen. Fly, we'd like to extend an invitation to come over and dine on sushi with us, by the way. I spin a mean roll and have a couple bottles of killer sake to go along with the meal. The academy now sells some of their lesson results during lunch time for a pittance, so our employees have become regular fixtures there.

Freddy, the California Sushi Academy looks very interesting, too bad we live in Chicago.

I am interested in the:

 Macrobiotic Cooking Course (4-Monday series)
Macrobiotics is a dietary lifestyle for health conscious people. It has been a trend in the culinary scene (it's Madonna's diet secret!). The greatest example of a macrobiotic diet is the Japanese vegetarian diet. Macrobiotic cooking utilizes a rich variety of whole grain, soybean, vegetable, and fruit based dishes. Join us in our four-day class on Mondays for a hands-on course of learning, creating, and eating absolutely delicious macrobiotic dishes (brown rice sushi, buckwheat croquette, amarantha salad, etc...)!
Instructor: Ms. Miyuki Kato, Macrobiotic Culinary Consultant.
---------------------
Do you know of a good Japanese vegetarian diet cookbook that you could recommend? Thanks.
