So this year I have been trying to improve my health in little ways.

I just replaced my daily lunch bag of potato chips with some home made chex mix, a bag of carrots and cheese or fruit trail mix. Potato Chips are mostly empty calories, but at least the chex mix has some nutritional value to it.

So what is your tip?

Oh and I am really trying to reduce the ammount of soda I take in. I have been adidcted to caffine for far to long. I have been trying some teas to replace the caffine in my diet and it seems to be working. This is a real battle fro me and I am hoping to try and finally kick the habit. Who knows this may actually cure my 25 years of insomnia and prevent any more kidney stones!

FYI, almonds are very high in fat...hazelnuts and (unsalted) peanuts are the nuts which are lowest in fat...you'd think I'd take my own advice!

'Sexercise' yourself into shape

The NHS has some new advice for people struggling to schedule a fitness routine into their daily lives - a workout between the sheets.

According to the NHS Direct website, "sexercise" can lower the risk of heart attacks and helps people live longer.

Endorphins released during orgasm stimulate immune system cells, which also helps target illnesses like cancer, as well as wrinkles, it states.

Sexual health experts said such claims could not be scientifically proven.

"It's good to see the NHS are promoting sexual wellbeing," Dr Melissa Sayer told the Guardian newspaper.

"Yes, there is evidence that sex has benefits for mental wellbeing, but to say there is a link with reduced risk of heart disease and cancer is taking the argument too far."

NHS Direct, however, told the paper the content was "backed by science and clinical evidence" and "isn't just a bit of fun".

'Regular romps'

The advice, published under the headline "Get more than zeds in bed", is one of several sexual health-related articles to be found on the NHS Direct website.

Sex with a little energy and imagination provides a workout worthy of an athlete, the article says.

If you're worried about wrinkles - orgasms even help prevent frown lines from deepening
NHS Direct

"Forget about jogging round the block or struggling with sit-ups.

"Sex uses every muscle group, gets the heart and lungs working hard, and burns about 300 calories an hour."

The advice suggests "regular romps this winter" could lead to a better body and a younger look.

Increased production of endorphins "will make your hair shine and your skin smooth," it adds.

"If you're worried about wrinkles - orgasms even help prevent frown lines from deepening."

The article goes on to say that orgasms release "painkillers" into the bloodstream, which helping keep mild illnesses like colds and aches and pains at bay.

The production of extra oestrogen and testosterone hormones "will keep your bones and muscles healthy, leaving you feeling fabulous inside and out".

Lose the Weight, Have Better Sex
by Dr. Ruth Westheimer

My latest book is titled Dr. Ruth's Top Ten Secrets for Great Sex (with Pierre A. Lehu, Jossey-Bass, 2009). The publishers timed it to come out around Valentine's Day. All this is great marketing, but you know what? There really aren't any secrets. I'm not saying that if people read this book they won't learn ways of improving their sex life. When you've been a practicing sex therapist for many years and have answered people's questions in all sorts of media for decades, you do know what to tell people when it comes to improving their sex life. But the problem is that no matter how many times you tell them, they don't always listen. This book, and all the other ones that I've written and other experts have written don't really have much in the way of new scientific advancements to reveal, but rather are filled with the same advice we've been repeating endlessly. But if people don't accept that advice, then it's no secret that many people are going to have a lousy sex life.

But since I want everyone to have terrific sex, I keep publishing books in the hopes that I'll reach some people and get them to pay attention. Because the one secret there to having great sex is to pay attention to your sex life. If you and your partner have excellent communications and put some energy and effort into having sex, and make dates to have sex, and turn off the TV so that you have time to have sex, then you'll have great sex. But if you think that great sex is going to tap you on the shoulder and say "Here I am," then you're going to have a very sad sex life.

I do have one other secret to reveal, that's not even in the book because the research wasn't done yet when I wrote it. If you're an overweight male and you want to have great sex, then you must start losing that excess weight immediately.

Everyone has seen those TV commercials where they show the arteries leading to the heart filling up with plaque cells from too much cholesterol. But plaque doesn't gather only in that one set of arteries. If it's there, it's everywhere, including the arteries leading to the penis. Do you know what makes a man's penis stand erect? It's blood. And if a man's arteries are blocked, then there won't be enough blood flowing into his penis to cause an erection, or at least not a very hard one. So if a man with high cholesterol does something about it, while improving his physique, he'll also be improving his sex life.

And there's another reason why fat men should lose weight. Fat cells make estrogen, even in men. So if a man has too many fat cells, he's going to have a lot of estrogen, the female sex hormone, floating around in his blood stream. And the overall effect is going to be to lower his libido, his desire for sex.

And, did you know that in a normal man, one third of his penis is below his skin? That's right, the penis doesn't start where you can see it, but below the skin. Now I said one third is below the surface, but in fat men, that percentage increases. So fat men appear to have smaller penis because more of their penis is buried underneath all that excess flesh.

So now I've given every man who needs to lose some weight three more reasons to begin to diet and exercise more: he'll have an easier time having erections, his sex drive will increase and his penis will grow. If that's not enough incentive, then I don't know what is.

Some good advice is to eat more dark green veggies, more dark berries, more healthy fats (from nuts/seeds/cheese/healthy meats/butter). Try not to get most of your calories from carbs, unless you're really active and can burn through them as you take them in. Carbohydrates should not be the "base" of the food pyramid. Make your chex mix mostly nuts and seeds, rather than mostly grains.

This doesn't mean everyone should be on a low carb diet, but it does mean everyone shouldn't eat as much carbs as they likely do.

You can google syndrome x/hyperinsulemia to see why too little exercise, nutrient deficiency and excess carbs are a factor in most chronic conditions people spend the rest of their lives medicated for.

As for soda, the massive quantity of refined sugar (simple carb) is more of an issue than caffiene. With diet soda, the artificial sweeteners are worse than refined sugar.

Low fat diets are unhealthy, unless your body doesn't make brain cells, hormones and cell membranes from fats and lipids. Inadequate lipid intake results in systemic inflammation.

Use olive oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, butter (organic), and fatty wild (not farmed) fish. Also, most folks will do well eating meat - even red meat - as long is the animals are healthy, which is to say they are pasture raised.

Never use hydrogenated oils, or old/rancid oils.

And avoid any soy that isn't fermented.

Good suggestions, Bittersweet. But a question: by fermented soy, do you mean tempeh and miso?

I also agree with you about the greens and dark berries. I try really hard to shape my diet around veggies, beans, fruit and slight quantities of nuts, but damn those grains, oils, and sugars! They call out to me like sirens. Evil, they be!
