the later, tiny gi joes. hmm action figures since they didnt really resemble the classic, and followed the advertisement, erm cartoon. id say those would then be action figures.

Well, Toys R Us online has them categorized under Action Figures. But I only think that's because it's a "Boy thing". You don't really look for boy type toys under dolls.
Mind you, Barbie? Ken isn't really masculine. He's a preppy, jock frou-frou type of man. Barbie needs herself a manly man. So, along comes hottie, buff military man G.I. Joe, right?
Really... which one is a chick gonna drop her drawers for? Not the preppy in the polo! No way!
So, that brings me back to the whole 'doll thing'....

And dolls don't come with various weapons, grenades, claymores, Dragon anti-tank weapons, body armor, etc.

You think plastic boobs scaled to 38D's, and a convertible, isn't equipment to accomplish the given mission? You hold it in your hand, and pretend it's walking, talking. You help it throw it's little gernades, definitely a doll!

A Humvee is NOT the type of vehicle a Barbie drives. Barbie does not have Blackhawk helicopters, or sniper rifles.

strikes me that this doll action figure debate goes back to say when we were ten. playing with our gi joes and the girls would call them dolls.

You could call both GI Joe and Barbie action figures- both come with a full line of accessories to compliment the doll, and all have a marketed role.

The primary difference between dolls and action figures is that an action figure has a role to play in the game, whereas a doll is just a doll. There are different kinds of Barbies, be it "Handbag Shopping Barbie" or "Night-Vision Sex Video Barbie", but each one is tailored for some specific "action". The same goes with G.I. Joe toys- Each Joe toy in the lineup is completely unique, and comes with its own backstory.

A doll is just something to play with- an action figure gives you a story to jump into.
