San Felipe, Baja

Our "mostest" favorite place! Small town on the Sea of Cortez about 120 miles south of Calexico/Mexicali. Shrimp is there claim to fame. Easy prices, beautiful coastal desert scenery. Large American/Canadian retirees community.

San Felipe, BC Norte, Mexico, What can I say, it's a wonderful place! Got back yesterday after five days in Baja. Probably going back down for May and June.

Nigel is absolutely correct about the seafood and the atmosphere delicious and magical! First night we had Fish Tacos, Shrimp Quesadillas and all the trimmings and Margaritas of course! $12 bucks! How can you beat that? All the food is cheap and plentiful. Accommodations are clean and comfortable for around $30 to $50 a night, not the Ritz but serviceable. Besides you don't go down there to sit in a hotel room. The locals are very pleased if you even attempt to speak spanish. Between that and sign language you shouldn't have any problem. Don't forget 'por favor' and 'gratias' (please and thank you) '¿Cuánto?' (how much) '¿dónde está el baño' (where is the restroom) these will get you by. Please also remember you are in a third world country and the vast majority of the population lives in dire poverty so tip when you can and if someone wants to wash your windhield one or two pesos will be greatly appreciated (even if your windshield is already clean.) When you shop though they expect to bargain for everything so don't be afraid to counter offer.

One thing! Right now they are working on the highway from Mexicali to San Felipe. There are a couple of detours where you are taken off the highway onto dirt access roads but only a few miles. When the work is finished the last twenty-five miles will be 4 lanes divided into San Felipe. Its at least a good two lane paved highway all the way. Coming back across the border can try your patience, took almost two hours to go the last two miles so it's a good idea to make sure you fill up in San Felipe or as soon as you get to Mexicali.

I could go on for another four or five hundred words (haven't even mentioned fishing) so if anyone wants more information PM. This was our fourth trip in three years and our last was in December 2008. Don't know it all but we have learned a bunch.

Via con Dios, mi amigos!
