Hey AJay, I think this was actually the first UFO McDonalds. When I saw your post I remembered eating at this one near Alconbury England after a few pints

I'd love to hear the pros and cons of New Mexico. Thinking of traveling to Santa Fe to see if its a good place to settle during retirement. AJay or others in the know....what's there to love about New Mexico? And how's the water situation?

Santa Fe is a wonderful place....one you'll fall in love with immediately. there is no water issues in that area, however in the central and southern parts of the state, there can be periods where you're asked to be conservative about watering lawns, washing cars etc. there are several aquifers running about the state as well as runoff from snow fall in the mountains.
the weather is what i love the best. i haven't seen snow in several years here in the SE desert. the temps have been in the 60's & 70's most of the winter. in santa fe, however, it does get cold.....and i mean daytime highs in the 30's to 50's most the winter. there are beautiful adobes and stucco with great southwestern architecture and influence. the culture is also a bit on the edgy-contemporary side with many notable artists and galleries. there are several film festivals since NM has become "the new hollywood". there film industry shoots many films here now. we have the new spaceport here: http://www.spaceportamerica.com/ many aerospace and high tech jobs are being relocated to NM. we have los alamos and a huge nuclear support industry here, as well as the nuclear waste repository and plans for a nuclear reclamation complex in the works. we have wind farms for new energy generation. we have mountains with ski lodges and great skiing, and desert as well as wildlife refuges. are most of all, we have a great ethnic diversity. from the native american colonies in taos, reservation life, mexican and spanish cultures to european influences. the only thing we're short on is beachfront property......but hey, there's always the pecos and rio grande... |

one of my favourite drives. down into the santa fe/taos area from pueblo. through the sangre de christos, through the mustard fields south of questa and into some unreally beautiful country.
great place! N. --= I Might be the Stig =-- |

Ajay, great comments, couldn’t agree with you more. I think New Mexico is an overlooked gem. I would add a couple things like:
Eye popping sunsets 365 days of the year. Great variety of fishing, Kokanee salmon, Makinaw, Walleye, Tigermuskies, numerous varieties of Bass and Trout. The balloon fiesta, largest gathering of hot air balloons in the world. Here in Albuquerque we have the longest continuous tram in the world traveling to the top (10,300ft) of the Sandia Peak. Ajay, Nigel, and Freedom...A big thank you! Sounds like a happenin' place. Open skies and lots of sunshine is exactly what I'm looking for. My husband talks fondly of skiing at Taos years ago, and says the Santa Fe area is the only place he would consider moving to. We are both born and raised New Englanders and everyone knows how much we are creatures of habit here!
